Skinner El Dorado Grenache 2019
Skinner El Dorado Grenache 2019
Grenache is one of the five varietals planted at the original J. SKINNER winery in the 1860’s and is the focal point of their wine program today. It is the most widely planted wine grape in the world, but only 8500 acres exist in California. Recently, Grenache has seen a renaissance in quality and plantings in California. Skinner have five clones of Grenache planted in poor shallow soils onto low vigour rootstocks that limit yields and concentrate flavour. The warm and dry Mediterranean climate, coupled with volcanic and granitic soils, makes this region ideally suited to this grape varietal.
Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
"Fruit from vines at a wide range of altitudes, from 1,300 to 3,000 feet, focusing mostly on grapes from Fenaughty and Sumu Kaw. This wine comes across as light and brisk, with a texture that’s just generous enough to mellow the cool spiciness and floral strawberry flavours. Fresh and pretty, it’s a lovely match for chicken liver mousse or most anything on a charcuterie plate." Reviewed by Joshua Greene Wine & Spirits Magazine
Winemaker's Notes
Skinner source grapes from 6 vineyards of various aspects, soils, and elevations ranging from 1300’ to 2800’ to make a wine representative of El Dorado. Nearly one-third comes from Fenaughty in the northern part of the region followed by equal representation from South Fork, Withers, and Sumu Kaw plus a dash of a few other sites as well. The resulting wine is approachable and ready to enjoy upon release.
