77% Petite Sirah, 14% Graciano, and 9% Syrah, from Stolpman, RBV, TTT, and Kimsey vineyards, 69% new French oak. “While levo is focused primarily on Rhone varietals, I have always wanted to make a wine that screamed "California" or even better, "America." While initially I was tempted to make a Zin, I knew it is already made very well in the states and other countries (Primitivo of Italy, Zins of CA). That got me thinking about Petite Sirah. It is a unique varietal as it is fairly specific to America, especially California. There are some examples of "Durif" in Australia (Petite Sirah's alias) but they are far and few between. Prior to prohibition PS was one of the most widely planted grapes in California. Most of the vines were ripped out during this time as commercial grape growing to produce wine was illegal. Once prohibition ended (Thank God), California became obsessed with the Bordeaux (Cab) and Burgundian (Chardonnay/Pinot Noir) varietals and Petite Sirah was lost in translation. This is why I am so amped (& honored) to make it. It feels like the roots of California, a true OG, and Americana at its best.
 In the glass, Petite Sirah is over the top in every way (this appeals to me, and offends others) - really just like guzzling Rock n' Roll. Opaque color, massive acidity and colossal tannin - everything is turned up to eleven. Some people love it, some can't handle it. I have made Petite Sirah since 2013, when I was fortunate enough to get offered a old dry farmed block at Stolpman Vineyards in Ballard Canyon. This wine can age for decades, or be enjoyed upon release with a generous decant. It is always one of my favorite wines to make, as it is a true challenge to coax out the beast, while still maintaining beauty and elegance.”
