Established by the Duncan family of Silver Oak, Twomey originated with a remarkable vineyard, the Soda Canyon Ranch in south-eastern Napa Valley, bought in 1999. Planted with French clones in well-drained volcanic soils, the Merlot that is grown there possesses such complexity that they felt it called for a wine of its own. Twomey’s founding winemaker, Daniel Baron, developed his passion for Merlot during the early 1980’s while working in Pomerol and Saint-Émilion. He had always hoped to make a California Merlot with a French sensibility but lacked access to fruit with the characteristics he required. The acquisition of the Soda Canyon Ranch provided the perfect opportunity to fulfil his ambition of making a top-flight Napa Valley Merlot. In 2012 Jean-Claude Berrouet, former winemaker at Château Pétrus, joined Twomey as a consultant.
