Rodney Strong Vineyards was established in 1959 by the eponymous dancer. In 1989 it was bought by Tom Klein, who had first encountered the winery as a project whilst a San Francisco-based management consultant. At that time a seed was planted in his mind, and, having returned to his family’s agricultural company, travelled extensively and researched the wine industry in many parts of the world, all the while developing his palate and his passion for wine. The circle was completed with the purchase of the winery.

Sustainability is a major preoccupation here, starting with the land and extending to all their business practices. They incorporated environmental protection into their company values in 1994 and installed one of the wine world’s first solar panel arrays in 2001. Rodney Strong was also a key winery in the “Sustainability Certification” pilot program through the California association of Wine Grape Growers and the California Wine Institute leading to their becoming the one of the first certified for both their winery and vineyards. They are also Sonoma County’s first carbon neutral winery.
