PlumpJack Winery

Established in 1997 by Governor of California, Gavin Newsom and billionaire, Gordon Getty, who opened the PlumpJack wine shop in 1992 in San Francisco with the aim of making the experience of buying wine more approachable in a friendly environment, emphasizing its fun and discovery. As such they named it after Shakespeare’s convivial, full-fat character, Sir John “PlumpJack” Falstaff. The winery came next, when they “stumbled upon” the fifty-three acre estate in the heart of Oakville (a spot that was formerly Mt. Eden) in 1995. PlumpJack began early on to garner high praise for their Cabernet Sauvignons, gaining a little notoriety in 2000 when they made the courageous decision to replace traditional corks with Stelvin screwcap closures on half of their most expensive wine, the 1997 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2012 Aaron Miller, previously at Lewis Cellars, was appointed winemaker.
