The mountain complement of sister-estate, PlumpJack, which lies on the valley floor, CADE (for some reason almost always capitalised) is perched on the slopes of Howell Mountain. This is a fifty-four acre estate with twenty-one acres planted with vines, set above the fog line at 1,800ft, established in 2005.
PlumpJack’s owners took the opportunity to build the winery from the ground up and spared no expense in constructing a state-of-the-art winery, the organically cultivated vineyards surrounded by tall evergreens and native Manzanita trees (the tree in their logo). CADE Estate, like PlumpJack, takes its name from Shakespeare, who used the term to refer to the wine casks, or cades, shipped from Bordeaux to England in Elizabethan times.
Winemaker Danielle Cyrot is making high elevation Cabernet Sauvignon that reflects the intense, powerful character of the estate while maintaining a balance of mountain fruit, firm acidity and judicious oak. These are layered, complex wines with approachability and ageability, a nuanced expression that they like to call “Modern Howell Mountain.”
