Bilancia is a small Hawke's Bay producer of exceptional Pinot Gris, Viognier, Chardonnay and Syrah. Warren Gibson (winemaker at Trinity Hill) and his winemaker wife, Lorraine Leheny established Bilancia in 1997. They chose Hawke's Bay as the only area in New Zealand that they felt could satisfy all the requirements they had for making wine themselves.
Late in 1997 Warren and Lorraine bought 6 hectares (15 acres) of land covering the front and back of Roys Hill, west of Hastings on State Highway 50. In September 1998 the first Syrah vines went in on the uppermost slope of the North facing back of the hill and a gradual progression of terracing and planting continued down the hill until 2002 when the only flat part of the vineyard was planted to Viognier. This vineyard has been named La collina, Italian for "The Hill".
From 2004 all fruit has been taken from Hawke's Bay vineyards. Syrah and Viognier are from La Collina and some Syrah is also taken from Gimblett Road Vineyards. The other varieties are purchased from quality outside sources; Glencoe Station, south of Maraekakaho and Black Bridge Estate at Haumoana.
