| Central Coast Viognier |
|
John Alban writes: "with the brashness that only comes from being too young to know any better, I spent the mid 1980’s driving all over the western corridor of Highway 46 in Northern San Luis Obispo County looking for anyone open minded enough to grow Rhône Varieties. Perhaps one of the greatest surprises of my life was that after candidly explaining that I wanted to cut the top off of their existing vines, and then graft them over to varieties with which they had no familiarity, some folks actually said, “Do it”. I would elaborate that I had very little experience, even less money, and that should something happen to me, they would be left with selections they knew nothing about. When a few growers said, “sounds like a good idea to me,” I knew I had found my brethren. These vineyards became the source of Alban Vineyards’ first commercial releases and much of the budwood for the subsequent explosion in Rhone inspired acreage in California."
Notes
A combination of fruit from the very first western corridor vineyard grafted over to Viognier by Alban in 1986 and some of his estate Edna Valley fruit (which he began producing in 1993). A new vineyard, which will play a more prominent role in subsequent vintages brings deep stone fruit and restrained tropical notes to the blend. More forward fruitiness than the Estate Viognier, this wine should be consumed within 3 years of its vintage for those looking for the primary stone fruit and pear notes, which Viognier can convey.
Hand harvested the last two weeks of October, this vintage was 25% barrel fermented in a combination of new and used French oak; 75% fermented in tank. The finished wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered. 1800 cases produced.
