"All winemakers review and document the changes in sugars and acids within their grapes during maturation. However, the best winemakers examine and eat a lot of grapes throughout the growing season; a little like gypsy’s reading tea leaves, they are looking at intangibles to make their harvest decisions. While I am convinced that great tasting, mature fruit is essential for making excellent wine, I also recognize that the numbers must mean something. In 2005, not only did the fruit taste super, the numbers, for the very first time, were absolutely perfect. This vintage is one of tremendous opulence tempered by sufficient structure to maintain grace and elegance. It is a very powerful, and rich year but with a majesty that comes from purity and harmony. Many of you know that I would never get so strong in my language regarding one of my own wines, maybe I’m anthropomorphizing a bit. After all, the wine is named for my mother…" John Alban.
Open top fermentation with native yeasts, punched down by hand, aged 17 months in new French oak barrels. Bottled unfined and unfiltered May of 2007; 2500 six packs produced.
Notes
The intense, inky/ruby/purple-tinged 2005 Syrah Reva Vineyard boasts gorgeous notes of graphite, smoke, roasted meat, herbs, and oodles of blackberries and creme de cassis. This full-bodied, fabulously rich Syrah is a superb success for the vintage. The Wine Advocate
