A relative newcomer to the increasingly modish Margaret River scene, Arlewood Estate has already begun to upset the established order. It was established in 1988 in the Willyabrup Valley of the Margaret River region in Western Australia and is a family-owned and operated winery headed up by Garry Gosatti.
Just 4 kms from the Indian Ocean which bounds it on three sides Arlewood benefits from the best of the region's landscape and climate. The ocean moderates extremes of temperature: a maritime climate providing for wet and stormy winters, with an annual rainfall of 1150mm, usually between April and October, and long, dry mild summers. The soil is rich, gravelly topsoil to a depth of 300-400mm over loamy clay with excellent drainage. Minimal soil cultivation is applied.
Arlewood are committed to the production of limited quantities of high quality wines made only from estate grown fruit. The emphasis is firmly on viticulture and the production of top-quality grapes as a means of achieving this end.
The Semillon Sauvignon Blanc has lovely freshness and acidity matched with ripe fruit and is delicious drunk unaccompanied by food or with seafood. The Semillon has rich toasty notes and a hint of kiwi and smokiness while the Chardonnay shows more substantial body and fruit with a skillful display of balance and great length. For the reds, the Shiraz shows classic spice and black fruit with a touch of equally classic Margaret River structure. Cabernet Merlot is smooth and chocolatey. The Cabernet Sauvignon crowns the range: it has great depth, rich, dark fruit, cedar and finely married oak. It was recently voted one of the top Margaret River Cabernets by Decanter Magazine.
