From the northern stretches of Alexander Valley to the far outposts of the Sonoma Coast, Sonoma County is the core of Rodney Strong Vineyards. Proprietor, Tom Klein believes that “Place isn’t the only thing, but place is the most important thing” for high quality wine production. This is reflected in the quality of the vineyards they own and of the fruit they source. The winery itself dates back to 1959 when Rodney Strong retired from his profession as a ballet dancer.
Sustainability is a major preoccupation , starting with the land and extending to all their business practices. Environmental protection was incorporated into the company values in 1994 and one of the wine world’s first solar panel arrays installed in 2001. They are also Sonoma County’s first carbon neutral winery.
These wines represent terrific value with perhaps the Alexander Valley Cabernet and Chalk Hill Chardonnay particular highlights, while the Sonoma County trio over-deliver for the price. Winemaker, Justin Seidenfeld took over winemaking duties in 2015 and has taken the wines on to a new level. At the same time, the development of the new Cooley Ranch, with its vineyards high above the fogline in the far northern reaches of Sonoma, has added extra depth and intensity to the Cabernet Sauvignons in particular.
